Choosing the Best Secondary School after PSLE for your children has become more complex with the introduction of the AL or Achievement Level scoring system. In the past, most parents and guardians would have been familiar with the traditional T-score marking system that relied on cut-off marks based on each school’s annual results. In this blog, we’ll explore the new scoring system and provide tips to help you make informed decisions about your child’s education.
2022 is the year of change as the Ministry of Education, or MOE has announced that choice order methods will be used to determine the secondary school your child is admitted in. The choices are determined based on your child’s answers when first ranking secondary school options on their S1 form.
In this article, we look at the schedule for Secondary 1 Posting in 2022 and talk about the fresh changes in place. Stay with us as we help you learn more about your ward’s progress toward secondary education.
Relevant Info and Things to take note in 2023
The results of the 2022 Primary School Leaving Examination or PSLE were released on the 23rd of November, 2022. Most schools passed on the results to their students or proxies before 11 am on the 23rd. In other words, parents who have kids sitting for PSLE this year should take note that late November 2023 will be the period PSLE results will be released. Plan your holidays carefully so that you and your child can be ready and present in Singapore to manage the process of choosing Secondary schools.
All students received an S1 option or choice form along with their PSLE results. The S1 option form is your go-to guide for determining the school for your child and filling in relevant details. The S1 Option Form comes with a unique pin or personal identification number on the top right-hand corner. Students are required to fill in the form and submit their options online.
The forms require an elaborate list of options to be filled out. MOE has announced that choice order methods will be used to determine the secondary school your child is posted to. The choices are determined on the basis of the form your child fills when first ranking secondary school options on their S1 form.
Secondary 1 Results
Once the S1 Option form is filled, the Secondary 1 Results will be released by the 23rd of December. The results will be uploaded through an SMS, the primary school of candidates, and a web portal. The web portal can be accessed through the PIN generated earlier.
Once students receive posting details, they should check the school’s website to study the relevant admission dates and schedule. Most schools start the academic year in the first week of January.
How the Choice Order System Works
It is best to illustrate the workings of the choice order system through an example. Let us take two students, Amy and Kevin. Both Amy and Kevin have scored the same number of points required for admission into XXX Secondary school. However, the school only has one spot up for grabs.
As part of the previous system, a candidate would be selected through computerised balloting without bias. However, the new choice-based system has changed that and improved the probability of students getting into their dream secondary school.
As part of the new change, students are asked to fill up to 6 school choices within their Option Form. Once the choices are filled, students are analyzed based on the ethos, values, learning methodologies, and pros of the school they want to go to.
For instance, if Kevin had listed XXX Secondary School on the top of his preferences list, and Amy had listed it as fourth, then Kevin would be chosen over Amy for admission into the said school. However, the balloting system will still be used if both candidates have chosen the same school as their top priority.
A dream school for one candidate may or may not be the same for another candidate. The choices-based model makes tiebreakers more interesting and allows evaluators to send students to a school of their choice.
Tips for Choosing the Right Secondary 1 School After PSLE
Your child is now graduating from primary school, and it is time for you to sit down with them and choose an appropriate school for the secondary 1 level. The next 4 to 5 years are highly crucial for their life and will challenge both of you.
Some of the tips most parents can follow for 2022 and 2023 are:
Understand Their Strengths
It is highly necessary for you to take time to understand your child’s strengths and what they expect from the future. Give your feedback, but only after understanding their perspective.
Be Aware of PSLE
The PSLE has gone through changes, and it’s important to be aware of them. We have outlined the cut-off points, and the option form in this article above, and you may find it helpful to run through it again. You can also study cut-off points for previous years to prepare your child accordingly.
Additionally, you should also consider the subject combination and how it matches up with the secondary school of your choice.
Consider Locations
Always consider the location of the school and the distance from your home before finalising a secondary school. You will want the school to be located nearby without an elaborate journey. Time is precious, and you don’t want your child to waste any commuting to and from school every day.
This guide is useful for both parents and children planning for Secondary 1 posting in 2022 and 2023. We hope you got the information you required and can take the step forward toward secondary education.
