The W@W Media Team

Although everything the W@W Media Team does is very interesting, what is more interesting is how the Media Team came to be, and how the Media Team gives us a glimpse of what the company culture at W@W is like. Read on to find out more!
The idea for the W@W Media Team was first born out of a job interview. When accepting applications for the role of a W@W teacher, potential candidates were asked to submit a video about why they should be chosen for the role. One particular candidate, Teacher Mitsuko, stood out for her content creation skills and dramatic editing flair. When W@W’s management realised that she had a talent for making videos, they asked her whether she would be willing to create YouTube videos for W@W’s YouTube channel, which was still budding at the time.
Later, a call to arms came from the still-small Media Team for any teacher who felt that they could contribute in some shape or form to the Media Team. Teachers could help in any part of the content-making process, from ideation, scripting, filming, and post-production, according to their strengths and passions. Thus, the W@W Media Team was born.
1. The W@w Media Team Comprises Teachers Who Are Passionate About Content Creation.
One fascinating thing to note is that W@W’s Media Team is manned by teachers on a voluntary basis. Whatever the teacher’s skill is, they can contribute and help achieve a bigger goal, such as to make a video on a YouTube channel. This is a fascinating piece of company culture as the teachers contributing to the Media Team do not feel forced to do it – although participation in such projects factor into their career progression and appraisal, teachers in W@W simply produce this content because they love to do so, whether behind the scenes or on camera.
Gone are the days of awkward company marketing material filming sessions where nobody really wants to be there – the teachers making short videos for YouTube are bright and cheery when they explain the various topics like how to score well for PSLE composition to their audience! Nobody in the Media Team has been “arrowed” to do anything – rather, they come together and ask where they can help and what the team needs to achieve their goal.
2. The Media Team allows individuals to express themselves and be creative!
Another lesson that the W@W Media Team teaches is that if the management of the company allows teachers to express their own creativity and skills to show their individuality, they will be more passionate about the project as they feel as though they matter. What every employee hates is feeling like they are just some “cog in the machine”. Instead, by allowing teachers who are uncomfortable with being filmed to assume a secondary role such as scriptwriting, and teachers who love presenting to talk on camera, each teacher has an opportunity to own the roles and responsibilities which come with being a member of the Media Team.
3. The Media Team is an Opportunity to Create Structure and Community in W@W
When brainstorming ideas for the Media Team projects, teachers may sometimes run into issues and want to raise concerns. When planning such projects, teachers do not need to consider only the individual video or Instagram post – they need to consider the direction the W@W brand is taking and link this present content item to an overarching goal which W@W wants to accomplish. Thus, in planning and brainstorming ideas, W@W Media Team teachers must reach out to the management for guidance and support about the vision of W@W as a company.
At W@W, the directors are close to the teachers still and are willing to listen to teachers about any concerns they have. The management of W@W is open to suggestions about how they can improve any of the processes within the company. This forward-thinking leadership allows for a more open approach towards allowing contributions by individual teachers to the company, prompting creative thinking and initiative by teachers who want to work towards making the company better.
Such a willingness to listen to new ideas creates a sense of community and structure not only within the Media Team, but within the organisation as a whole, as good rapport and a sense of camaraderie is built between the individual teachers and the Middle Leaders, as well as the directors overseeing the entire company.
To conclude, W@W is a brand with a lot of personality, and the Media Team is an excellent example of how the teachers at W@W embody the brand by being passionate about unlocking skills in students both inside and outside the classroom, inspiring them with the necessary confidence to go forward and excel in life.
