The W@W Motto: Writing can be taught
In the words of W@W Operation Director, Miss Kym Wong, she shares the important motto that guides all teachers and staff. We all believe writing can be taught.
Writing can be taught, and it empowers children. This is the fundamental belief of WR!TERS @ WORK. With a structured and results-driven curriculum, a child can grow to become a confident writer.
Founded in 2012 by a group of edu-preneurs, WR!TERS @ WORK is a forerunner when it comes to teaching writing skills through logical, visible thinking.
From the beginning, my team and I challenged how writing was traditionally being taught. We changed people’s perceptions along the way – our team of teachers, students and parents included. It’s heartening to say that this change has yielded results.
In schools, our students have achieved full marks in their English compositions. On a national level, our students are high-achievers who have attained distinctions and A* in English Language examinations.
A number of our students have even shined on the international stage by winning The Queen’s Commonwealth Writing Competition and The University of New South Wales Global International Competitions and Assessments for Schools.
The curriculum takes the students on a journey so they can build a library of ideas for their compositions. In every lesson we teach, we introduce a story with a unique title that gels the plot and vocabulary together. The students walk into WR!TERS @ WORK each week, eager to discover the latest story that they can write. We teach a repertoire of relevant and adaptable story plots, which the students can apply in school.
The unique story plots and contextual vocabulary form the fundamental building blocks for students to learn writing with ease. It helps them master writing skills with confidence. With the right foundation, students overcome the inherent fear that writing is difficult. As learning continues, writing becomes second nature.
The WR!TERS@WORK spirit is about challenging boundaries. We motivate our young writers to strive for excellent results. Every child is important to us. We recognise their efforts by featuring their compositions on gallery walls throughout our centres. We train students to be competitive writers through an annual writing competition and honour the top writers at award ceremonies.
Parents appreciate how we have gone above and beyond to show their children that writing well is an achievable goal. At WR!TERS@WORK, we celebrate successes and honour students’ efforts. We empower them with the lifelong gift of writing.
