For secondary school English, students will need to face the Hybrid Essay, which is exactly what it says on the tin. When we talk about “hybrid learning”, we think of a mix of online and in-classroom learning. Similarly, hybrid essays consist of a mix of essay genres, featuring elements and writing styles from different essay types. This article hopes to enlighten students and parents alike about the hybrid essay genre and how they may overcome them and score well.
Let us study some hybrid essay questions below and break them down one by one. Here are 4 examples of past-year hybrid essay questions from Singaporean O Level English papers.
Hybrid Essay Question 1:
“Which person has the most positive impact on your life? Describe the individual’s personality and in what ways he or she has influenced you.”
Breaking down this question, we can see that the different clauses of the question are from different essay genres and will involve different skills.
Hybrid Essay Question 2:
“Describe ways to relax after you have been busy. Explain why it is enjoyable for you.”
Hybrid Essay Question 3:
“There’s no place like home.” Is it true to you?”
Hybrid Essay Question 4:
“Do you feel that you need the long school vacation? How do you occupy your time during the December break, when schools are closed?”
As you can plainly see, writing these hybrid essays requires the student to showcase their various writing skills in various essay genres to pass with flying colours. There are sometimes up to 3 components of the question which the student must address in their writing, and if the student does not read the question carefully, these parts will be easy to miss and the student will not score well for their essay. Hybrid essays require the student to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise information from multiple sources. Thus, students must think critically and show their knowledge, effectively communicating their ideas through written prose.
The student needs to read the essay question extremely carefully. This may seem like an obvious point, but many students read the first part of the question and jump straight into answering it, losing marks when they fail to answer the rest of the question. The whole point of a hybrid essay is to answer all the parts of the question equally well. Students should be able to identify the genres present in the essay question, as that will guide their writing style for these questions. Different essay genres have different requirements, which we will elaborate on below.
For example, the argumentative essay genre requires the student to persuade their reader about the arguments they are making by providing relevant evidence to support their points. The descriptive essay genre, on the other hand, involves the student exercising their extensive vocabulary to immerse the reader in a sensory experience based on the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touch of the experience. The personal recount genre requires the student to draw from their personal experience in an authentic manner to reflect on their life.
Students will only know about the different genres of essays if they have read these types of essays before. As such, it is important for the student to be familiar with the different types of model essays available out there and read widely to ensure they know what the different techniques and requirements of each essay genre are during the exam.
After reading the essay question, the student must remember that they are under a timed setting. Planning their essay to divide the number of points equally between the various parts of the question could help the student write a balanced essay, addressing all the parts of the question. As such, the student should devote some time before starting the essay proper to write down a rough plan and bullet points of the main points he/she wants to make in the essay.
When writing the hybrid essay, the student should make sure to organise their thoughts, provide relevant examples and evidence, and maintain a coherent structure in their essay. A good format to follow would be PEEL, where the student makes their Point, provide Evidence, elaborates with a good Explanation and relevant examples, and Link the entire paragraph back to the point they are making in the first sentence of the paragraph. The evidence and examples used must be relevant to the point they are making and should support the argument well.
It goes without saying that any good essay will involve the student writing with good grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. These rules of the English language are like the mechanics of a clock – they must operate in unison to make sure the clock functions perfectly. If the student is not clear on the basics of grammar and punctuation (such as how to use a semicolon properly), they should clarify their doubts with their tuition teachers or teachers at school, doing practice exercises if necessary to brush up on their English rules.
Although the hybrid essay may be a daunting challenge for secondary school English students, they should approach it with an open mind and try to make the best out of it. The student should remember that the hybrid essay is an opportunity to showcase the various writing skills they have learned throughout secondary school and that they need to answer all the parts of the question.
