Primary 4 Comprehensive English Curriculum:
Connecting Language Mastery with Examination Skills
At Primary 4, we introduce your child to a more advanced English curriculum designed to bridge their learning with English exam requirements. This is the stage where we begin helping students understand how their English skills relate to both language mastery and examination success. Our Primary 4 Comprehensive English Curriculum focuses on:
By staying ahead of school expectations, your child will be better prepared for future academic challenges.
For the full curriculum details:
Our curriculum offers a balanced approach, emphasizing both creative composition writing and the technical mastery of the English language. It is designed to develop both writing and comprehension skills that will empower students to tackle diverse exam formats with confidence.
The programme includes:
Students explore various composition formats, including situational writing, and are guided on how to create structured, engaging stories. Through practice, they will gain proficiency in writing that meets exam standards.
This section builds strong grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. It prepares students for a wide range of exam formats, from vocabulary cloze to editing, synthesis and transformation, and comprehension exercises.
Our programme also includes targeted oral exam preparation, with an emphasis on stimulus-based conversation. Students will refine their speaking skills to communicate clearly and confidently, key to performing well in the PSLE Oral Exam.
Our Primary 4 English curriculum is designed to build essential skills for both creative expression and language accuracy. These skills are reinforced throughout the programme, allowing students to grow and refine their abilities.
Composition Writing: Students learn to develop well-structured compositions, including creative stories and situational writing. They are taught how to create engaging introductions, develop plotlines, and provide satisfying conclusions that demonstrate their understanding of the prompt.
Situational Writing: This key aspect of the curriculum teaches students how to write for specific purposes, such as letters, reports, or advertisements. They will practice tailoring their writing style to suit the context and audience, making their work both relevant and effective.
Grammar: Students strengthen their understanding of essential grammar rules, focusing on sentence structure, punctuation, and verb usage. This ensures their writing is clear, precise, and error-free.
Vocabulary: Expanding a student’s vocabulary is key to effective communication. Through targeted exercises such as vocabulary cloze and visual text comprehension, students learn to use a rich variety of words to express their ideas.
Grammar Cloze and Editing: These exercises help students practice identifying and correcting grammatical errors. Editing exercises refine their attention to detail, ensuring their writing is polished and accurate.
Comprehension Cloze: This helps students develop the skill of reading comprehension by filling in blanks within a passage, testing their understanding of context and word choice.
Synthesis and Transformation: This technique trains students to paraphrase or rephrase information, enhancing their critical thinking and writing flexibility. It helps them build the ability to reframe complex ideas into simpler terms, which is a valuable skill in both writing and speaking.
Comprehension Open-ended: Students practice answering open-ended questions, where they analyze and interpret written passages. This develops their critical thinking and helps them express thoughtful responses.
Stimulus-Based Conversation: To prepare for oral exams, students participate in stimulus-based conversations, responding to questions based on visual prompts. This approach helps them practice articulating their thoughts clearly, building confidence for both oral assessments and presentations.
The WRITERS AT WORK Primary 4 Comprehensive English Program offers a structured approach that aligns with English exam requirements, building essential writing, language, and exam strategies.
