Hello, this is Teacher Jemmies here.
A student whom I taught 2 years ago recently dropped me a text and questioned me about our Secondary notes and curriculum. Let’s listen to his audio file first.

He asked why week 11 revision notes and model essays are the same as the test Qs that are found in week 12 exam scripts. For context purposes, in WRITERS AT WORK we do periodical testing and week 12 we’re doing an in-house exam.

Before I address this student’s question. I wanna know

(1) how many of you think that English is a subject that you DO NOT NEED TO STUDY FOR?

(2) Do you know how to study for English exams (like essay writing or comprehension)?

I bet a lot of you saying ‘NO’ to both questions.

So, I decided to use WRITERS AT WORK Week 11 and Week 12 notes to teach students how to study for English exams. On Week 11, we give you curated notes with perfect answers, and you will be holding on to this set of answer key for 7 days. You’ve been informed that Week 12 there will be an exam, and you need to study this specific set of notes.

In short, students need to decide how to study a few pages of English notes filled with vocabulary and model essays. You can choose to
1. Read the notes over and over again
2. Highlight the hell out of this set of notes
3. Rewrite the set of notes
4. Sleep with the set of notes
5. Burn the set of notes in a cup of water and drink it like a talisman
In short, do whatever you need within the next 7 days to consume and comprehend the information given and prepare for exams. Do deliberate learning.

On week 12, when you’re given the exact same essay questions it is an opportunity to test if your studying methods worked for you. I’m not talking about memorising word for word but do you even know how to unpack the essay question accurately and start writing the essay confidently?

Do you can apply knowledge accurately when given the exact same question as the notes that you’ve been studying?
Do you understand the intricacies of different sentences used in the model essays that you’ve been reading? Do you know the rational regarding the placement of different sentences in the model essay?

Can you mimic or understand the variation of sentence structures used? Why specific conjunctions are used in specific paragraphs? Which sentence is used to tackle which part of the essay question? Which paragraphs are written to impress the examiner to achieve bonus marks? Which examples in the model essays can be applied in a different context?

As educators, we must teach students how to study English. It is very easy for Singapore secondary students to consume information in English but when we ask them how to study English it is a totally different ball game.
To learn a language well, it involves consuming information, then digesting it and knowing how to take it apart and reuse it in your own way.
