STORYBANKING® was developed by the founders of WRITERS AT WORK through hands-on teaching experience since 2007, working with students across different learning abilities.
High-ability students often brim with ideas but lack a reliable system to organise and elevate them when they have to transfer their ideas into written words. On the other hand, struggling students often freeze, uncertain what to write, how to begin, or know what “good writing” even looks like.
Across both groups, the breakthrough moment is remarkably similar: students improve faster when they have (1) clear structure and (2) high-quality examples they can study and apply.
That’s why our lessons intentionally feature strong models—model compositions, essays, sentences, phrases, and vocabulary—so students experience what top-band writing sounds like and understand how it’s constructed.

Students learn how a story or essay plot is constructed step by step: where tension rises, how conflict develops, and how resolution lands effectively. Then we build the story together, filling in details collaboratively so students learn to make strong, deliberate choices—not random ones.
This transforms story planning from guesswork into a repeatable process students can apply confidently across different themes and exam prompts.
Once the Story Curve is clear, we demonstrate how to craft sentences that bring the plot to life.

At the same time, we are mindful of cognitive load: how much a student can realistically process in a single lesson. Weekly STORYBANKING® sessions allow students to rehearse what they’ve learned, developing speed, mental resilience, and exam stamina. By the time they sit for an examination, they have already “experienced” similar story tasks through revise-and-recap sessions, multiple drafts, in-house tests, and focused revision lessons.
