Struggling with tricky grammar MCQs in the PSLE? You’re not alone. Many students get stumped when options look similar especially when they all seem grammatically correct. That’s why we’re launching a new blog series that breaks down PSLE Grammar MCQ Questions from the actual PSLE 2024 Paper 2 exam.
In each post, we’ll help you understand what the question is really testing, explain the grammar concept behind it, and give you exam-smart strategies to help your child choose the right answer confidently.
Let’s dive into Question 1 which focuses on prepositional phrases.
PSLE 2024 Grammar MCQ – Question 1
1) ________________ the students’ requests, the teacher said the project submission deadline would be extended.
(1) In case of
(2) In addition to
(3) In response to
(4) In connection with
At first glance, they all seem grammatically acceptable. How do we choose the right one?
Understanding the Question
This question looks simple but it’s meant to test how well students understand subtle differences in meaning between similar phrases. All four options:
• Begin with “in”
• Are prepositional phrases
• Appear grammatically correct
The challenge lies in choosing the phrase that fits the meaning of the sentence. The sentence is clearly describing a reaction to something. So, which phrase expresses that? Let’s break it down.
Option-by-Option Analysis
Option (1): In case of
🔍 Meaning: If something happens / in the event of
❌ Not suitable. This phrase describes a hypothetical situation — but the teacher has already responded to students’ requests.
Example: In case of fire, do not use the lift.
Option (2): In addition to
🔍 Meaning: Besides / as well as
❌ Incorrect. This phrase suggests adding something extra — but the sentence describes a cause-and-effect relationship, not an addition.
Example: In addition to singing, she also plays the piano.
Option (3): In response to ✅
🔍 Meaning: As a reaction to / because of
✅ Correct! The teacher is extending the deadline because of the students’ requests. This phrase fits the meaning perfectly.
Example: In response to complaints, the service was improved.
Option (4): In connection with
🔍 Meaning: Related to / regarding
❌ Incorrect. While grammatically fine, it doesn’t show a reaction. It just links two ideas.
Example: She was questioned in connection with the case.
Grammar Focus: Prepositional Phrases That Start with "In"
This question tests knowledge of prepositional phrases — groups of words that start with a preposition and act as a single unit of meaning. Some prepositional phrases, especially those that start with “in”, can be misleading because:
• They are grammatically correct
• Their meanings are subtle and context-dependent
• They often appear in PSLE grammar MCQs
Here’s a quick cheat sheet your child can remember:
• In case of means if something happens.
Example: In case of rain, bring an umbrella.
• In addition to means besides or as well as.
Example: In addition to playing football, he also swims every weekend.
• In response to means as a reaction to something.
Example: In response to the feedback, the teacher changed the seating arrangement.
• In connection with means related to or regarding.
Example: He was interviewed in connection with the school’s missing items.
Strategy: How to Tackle Similar Grammar MCQs
Here’s how to help your child approach grammar MCQs with confidence:
1. Focus on meaning, not just grammar
All four options might be grammatically correct but only one makes sense in context.
2. Plug in the answer mentally
Read the full sentence with each option. Does the sentence still make sense? Does the logic flow?
3. Eliminate obviously wrong choices
Often, two options can be ruled out quickly then your child just needs to compare the remaining two.
