W@W Team Bonding – The Experience

Team Bonding is an essential experience of W@W. Several times a year, teachers will gather in-person (or on Zoom, as they did during the pandemic) to get to know one another better through fun activities, sharing sessions, and food and drinks. Having a strong cohesive organisation is one of the aspects of W@W company culture that is hard to ignore, especially since W@W does it differently – the Team Bonding experience is hardly a performative exercise – it is a beautiful moment of recognition for all W@W teachers, whether experienced or new.

What is Team Bonding like?

There are 2 to 3 Team Bonding sessions in a year, at least. Smaller group Team Bonding sessions are more frequent compared to Team Bonding sessions involving the whole organisation. For special events like Teacher’s Day, W@W teachers come together and dress up according to a particular theme for a spot of fun with their colleagues!

During Team Bonding sessions, teachers play fun games such as treasure hunting and get to know one another better. There is food and drink and plenty of laughter to go around during Team Bonding sessions. Even normally introverted teachers see Team Bonding as a safe space to come out of their shell and socialise with their colleagues on a more personal level.

Why is Team Bonding Important?

Team Bonding is important as it fosters positive relationships between teachers outside of an academic and work setting. W@W is a large organisation, and it may be easy to feel lost in such a big company where experienced teachers already have established relationships with one another. However, Team Bonding is an opportunity for experienced teachers to get to know newer teachers. These relationships will carry the newer teachers through their working life at W@W, as they have someone to come to for guidance and help when they need it.

Team Bonding also encourages teachers to step out of their comfort zone. Introverted teachers may not be accustomed to socialising with others. However, part of growing as a person involves doing things which we may not be comfortable with at first. The informal, fun company culture during Team Bonding sessions helps teachers find a space to be themselves, which is important in every organisation. It is good for employees to be able to let loose occasionally, as getting out of serious mode is just as important as getting into it when it is time to face your students.

What Can You Tell About W@w as a Company Through Team Bonding?

One of the nicest aspects about W@W Team Bonding is the recognition of all teachers – both experienced and new. At Team Bonding sessions, Middle Leaders stand up and deliver a speech to everyone working in their team, whether they are new teachers or experienced teachers, about what they like about their teaching style, about their hopes and dreams for the future, and about anything they have recognised and appreciated about the teacher.

This recognition is highly important as every employee should feel appreciated and acknowledged for the things that they do in an organisation. Good morale is cultivated by being observant and detail-oriented about the employees in your company, as W@W’s management and Middle Leaders have demonstrated during Team Bonding sessions.

Team Bonding is made a valuable experience not because of the venue of the event, or the quality of the food – it is a valuable experience because the teachers and management make it so. Coming together as a team to celebrate one another’s achievements and recognise one another’s efforts after a busy or hectic period is what employees need to feel positive and appreciated.
